About the YALI RLC West Africa Emerging Leaders Program | Deadline: June 16, 2021 (2026)

**Type:** Merit-based **Field:** Business and Management **Location:** Ghana **Application deadline:** June 16, 2021 The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)  Regional Leadership Center in Ghana is inviting young West African leaders to join its Cohort of Emerging Leaders Program. This merit-based offering extends great opportunities for Africans. Among these include several leadership trainings to prepare delegates for leadership roles within their various endeavors in the tracks of: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civil Society Management, and Public Policy and Management. At the end of the program, participants shall be awarded a certificate and shall hence become a member of the YALI alumni. YALI was launched by the United States government as a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. The organization emphasizes the need to invest in opportunities for Africans through “grooming strong, results-oriented leaders.” YALI bases their movement from the following statistical analysis: nearly 1 in 3 Africans between the ages of 10 and 24, and approximately 60% of Africa’s total population below the age of 35. #### Further details The program will be hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and shall happen over the course of 17 weeks. Furthermore, the program is subdivided into four phases: 1. a five-week coursework phase delivered in-person or online 2. four weeks of a mentorship program 3. four weeks of internship 4. four weeks of community service The five-week coursework phases encompass three core courses, namely: Leadership and Accountability, Ethics, and Contemporary Issues Affecting Africa. Moreover, it presents an elective course selected from a sample of three courses covering three themes, namely Entrepreneurship, Public Policy and Management, and Civil Society Management. ![](https://i0.wp.com/scholarshipsforafricans.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/emmanuel-ikwuegbu-h5xEHzfepNk-unsplash.jpg?resize=1024%2C684&ssl=1)Photo by [Emmanuel Ikwuegbu](https://unsplash.com/@emmages?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/s/photos/african-students?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText) The program is two-pronged by design, with the Emerging Leaders Program targeting Africa’s young leaders and the Executive Leadership Program targeting the more experienced African leader group. Overall, the Emerging Leaders program entails a combination of taught content as well as practical and in-the-field leadership engagements which ensures optimum opportunities for Africans. The in-person training will be conducted in Ghana at the Accra RLC, whereas the online course will be available from any location around West Africa. #### Eligibility The YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa Emerging Leaders Program is open for applicants who meet the following criteria: - Are 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission, - Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Burkina Faso. - Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. - Are eligible to receive any necessary visa to Ghana, and - Are proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. * * * For your application to be considered, you must fill up an [online application form](http://yaliwestafrica.net/rlc/index.php/registernowopen/) that can be found on their website. How to apply for the YALI RLC West Africa Emerging Leaders Program | Deadline: June 16, 2021 2026

A practical, sponsor-agnostic sequence used by >95% of international scholarship applicants. Adapt to the sponsor's specific portal — the order rarely changes.

  1. 1
Confirm eligibility on the official site

Open http://yaliwestafrica.net/rlc/index.php/registernowopen/ and verify the sponsor's stated criteria match your profile — currently: "Young West African leaders aged 18–35 in business, civic, or public service". Sponsor rules change between intakes, so always confirm against the live call.

  2. 2
Secure a study place or admission offer

Apply to the host university or programme first where required, and obtain a conditional admission letter. A growing number of sponsors only fund applicants who already hold an offer.

  3. 3
Sit required tests and gather documents

Register for IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo (or SAT / GRE where required), request official transcripts, brief two or three referees, and prepare passport and identity documents at high resolution.

  4. 4
    Draft your essays and statements

Write a 500–1,000-word personal statement and any additional essays the sponsor specifies. Anchor each essay in concrete examples and tie your goals back to the sponsor's mission.

  5. 5
    Complete the online application

Create an account on http://yaliwestafrica.net/rlc/index.php/registernowopen/, fill in every field, and upload the required documents in the formats specified (PDF, max file size, single-file vs multi-file). Save progress frequently — most portals time out after 30–60 minutes.

  6. 6
Submit by Annual – check official site (aim 7 days early)

Sponsor portals routinely slow or fail in the final 24 hours. Submit early, download the confirmation receipt, and screenshot the submission timestamp. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

  7. 7
    Prepare for shortlist interviews

If shortlisted, Various will contact you within 4–12 weeks. Re-read your essays, rehearse 3–5 likely questions out loud, and confirm your time zone for any video interview.
