Applying from Kenya
Kenya consistently ranks among the top three African senders of fully funded scholarship winners to the US, UK, Canada and Australia. This hub answers the operational questions Kenyan applicants ask after they shortlist a programme — credential evaluation, visa appointments, financial proof, and what the recruiter at the destination university actually expects to see.

Credential evaluation (WES / ENIC / NUFFIC / APS)
Every destination wants a third-party validation of your transcripts. Choose the evaluator that matches your target country and order it directly — never through an agent.
WES (World Education Services)
Most US graduate admissions and all Canadian provincial nursing/engineering bodies require a WES course-by-course evaluation. Order directly through the WES portal; do not use an agent.
UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC)
Required by most UK NHS placements, professional registration bodies (GMC, NMC) and many post-1992 universities. Russell Group universities usually do not require ENIC for admissions but Tier 4/Student Route visas may.
Nuffic (IDW)
Required for Dutch government scholarships (NL Scholarship, Holland Scholarship) and most research-master admissions. Free if the institution requests it on your behalf.
uni-assist e.V.
Acts as the central application portal for ~180 German universities. Required before DAAD admission letters can be issued. Submit transcripts as certified copies in German or English.
Notarised + Apostille/Authenticated copies
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) requires notarised English transcripts authenticated by the Chinese embassy in your country. African Union Commission and Confucius Institute pathways have separate routes.
VETASSESS / Department of Home Affairs
Australia Awards uses its own internal evaluation — VETASSESS is only required for skilled migration or professional registration after graduation, not for student admission.
MOI letter & English-language waivers
A Medium-of-Instruction letter from your previous university can sometimes waive IELTS or TOEFL. Whether it's accepted depends on the destination — here's the current picture by country.
| Destination | MOI letter accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Rarely | Most US universities require TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo even when prior degree was English-medium. A handful (Howard, certain MasterCard partners) accept MOI letters case-by-case. |
| United Kingdom | Often | UKVI now lists most Commonwealth countries where English is an official language as exempt from secure English testing. Always confirm the specific institution's policy — many still ask for IELTS. |
| Canada | Sometimes | Most Canadian universities accept MOI letters from accredited African universities for graduate admissions; IRCC still requires IELTS for SDS visa stream. |
| Australia | Often | Australia Awards waives IELTS for applicants from Commonwealth African countries whose university transcripts are in English. Some destinations (e.g. medicine) still require IELTS. |
| Germany / EU | Sometimes | DAAD and most German English-taught Masters accept an MOI letter plus a high school of secondary English certificate (KCSE / WASSCE / NSC) at C or above. |

Financial documentation thresholds
The single most common reason Kenyan student visas get refused is unclear or insufficient proof of funds. These are the current minimum amounts and the exact document each consulate actually wants to see.
| Destination | Minimum amount | Document required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | USD 25,000–80,000 per year | I-20 financial certification + 6 months bank statements + sponsor affidavit (I-134) | Funding must cover tuition + living for at least the first academic year. Mastercard, Fulbright and university assistantships satisfy this automatically. |
| United Kingdom | GBP 13,348 (London) / GBP 10,224 (outside London) for living + full tuition | Bank statements showing funds held for 28 consecutive days, dated within 31 days of visa application | Funds must be in the applicant's or parent's name. If parent's, include birth certificate + sponsor letter. |
| Canada | CAD 20,635 GIC + first-year tuition | Scotiabank or ICICI GIC investment certificate | GIC replaces the older CAD 10,000 living-cost proof from Jan 2024. Tuition can be partially paid (50%) and balance shown in liquid funds. |
| Australia | AUD 29,710 living + tuition + AUD 2,500 travel | Bank statements or scholarship letter held for 3 months | Australia Awards waives this entirely. |
| Germany | EUR 11,904 per year (2026 Sperrkonto) | Blocked account confirmation from Expatrio/Fintiba/Deutsche Bank | DAAD scholars use the DAAD award letter in place of the blocked account. |

Recruiter tip
Top US graduate admissions teams know KCSE well — they don't need it 'translated'. What they want is a single PDF transcript with course-by-course grades + a one-page explanation of the Kenyan grading scale. Don't bury this in your application portal — email it to the international admissions officer.
Editorial guidance reflects NAFSA-aligned recruiter practice and is reviewed quarterly against destination institution intake briefs.
FAQs
Do I need WES if my Kenyan degree is taught in English?▾
Yes for US graduate admissions and Canadian licensing bodies — WES verifies authenticity and equivalency, not language. UK universities usually accept transcripts directly without WES.
Why was the Canadian SDS removed for Kenya?▾
IRCC ended SDS for all African countries in November 2024 to apply consistent processing standards. Regular study permits now take 8–12 weeks instead of the previous 4-week SDS turnaround.
Can I use M-Pesa balance as proof of funds?▾
No. Visa offices require bank or building-society statements held for the qualifying period (28 days UK, 90 days Australia, 6 months US). M-Pesa transfers can fund the account but are not themselves accepted as proof.
Is the APS certificate for Germany hard to get?▾
It takes 4–8 weeks. Submit your KCSE, university transcripts, and KES 16,000 fee at the German Embassy in Nairobi. Without APS, no German university will issue an admission letter.
