Before You Pay a University Deposit While Waiting for a Scholarship
Check the payment deadline, funding evidence and refund terms before committing money while a scholarship decision is still pending.

Your university wants a deposit before your scholarship result arrives. Paying may protect the place, but losing the scholarship may not entitle you to a refund. Waiting without an agreed extension can also put the offer at risk.
Before deciding, establish what the payment secures, what funding you actually hold and what the university will accept instead. The UK examples below illustrate different policies. They do not create a rule for every university or country.
Identify the payment and its deadline
Write down the exact payment name from your offer: application fee, acceptance deposit, tuition deposit or accommodation deposit. Do not assume that different payments share the same cancellation terms.
Manchester explains that a tuition deposit counts towards the course fee. Some programmes also require an acceptance deposit, which counts towards the later deposit requirement for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS, but may not cover it in full. The university communicates the applicable instructions to the applicant. Manchester tuition fee deposits
Record the deadline in the offer, the amount and currency, and the official payment route. Keep the offer and the policy for your intake together. A friend’s deadline or last year’s refund terms may not apply.
Describe your funding status accurately
An application receipt, interview invitation, conditional scholarship offer and accepted final award are different evidence. Tell admissions which one you have, the expected decision date and whether the award would cover all or only part of tuition.
At Manchester, an accepted full university tuition scholarship removes the deposit requirement. A partial award still requires payment of the deposit unless a recognised sponsor confirms it will cover the remaining tuition fees. This illustrates why the size and status of an award matter. Manchester scholarship and sponsorship rules
Do not describe expected funding as confirmed sponsorship. Ask which documents the university needs to assess your actual circumstances.
Request an extension or exemption before time runs out
Use the official admissions contact and include your applicant number, course, deposit deadline and scholarship decision date. Ask whether an extension, exemption or evidence-based alternative is available. A request alone does not change the deadline; obtain the decision in writing.
Glasgow illustrates the need for careful reading. Its general scholarship FAQ says deposits remain payable while applicants await scholarship decisions. Its deposit page also gives a specific evidence procedure for applicants relying on external or home-country scholarships covering all tuition. Applicants should check whether that procedure fits their case rather than assume everyone awaiting funding receives a waiver. Glasgow scholarship guidance and deposit policy
Read the refund exclusions before paying
Ask what happens if funding is refused, delayed or smaller than expected. Also check the request deadline, evidence needed, deductions and recipient of any refund.
Glasgow’s published 2026/27 terms specifically exclude an unsuccessful scholarship application as a refund reason. This is a concrete reason not to treat a deposit as a risk-free way to wait for funding. Other institutions may have different rules. Glasgow deposit refund terms
Chevening adds another important distinction: it does not pay university deposits. Universities may postpone or waive them at their discretion. If a scholar has already paid, the deposit is credited towards tuition; any return must be arranged with the university, rather than claimed as reimbursement from Chevening. Make a decision the household can afford
Before committing, agree what happens if no scholarship arrives. Can you still take up the place? If not, what amount could be lost under the actual terms? Would paying leave too little for necessary documents or other applications?
Prepare a short decision record: payment due, confirmed funding, unresolved funding, written admissions response and potential non-refundable amount. Include transfer charges and possible currency differences when asking about refunds. Do not count a hoped-for award as cash available today.
If the timing remains unworkable, ask about declining or deferring the offer and how that affects any funding application. Neither option should be assumed to preserve a scholarship. Keep the answer, payment receipt if you proceed, and the policy you relied on. These checks support an informed decision; they cannot guarantee funding, a refund or a retained place.
