Medical Scholarships for African Students: Uganda & Ethiopia Edition (2026)
Where medical and health-science funding actually hides for African students — postgraduate medical scholarships like Edinburgh's Glenmore award, health-research PhDs, ministry quotas and foundation grants, with special notes for Ugandan and Ethiopian applicants.

Medicine is the most requested field on this site — and the hardest to fund. There is no Chevening for an undergraduate MBBS. But there is real money for African medical students and doctors, if you know which of the four doors to knock on. This guide maps them, with special attention to the two countries we get the most medical questions from: Uganda and Ethiopia.
Door 1: Undergraduate medicine — government quotas
Almost no private foundation funds a full six-year medical degree. The realistic fully funded route for a first medical degree is a government scholarship quota:
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — includes medicine at Chinese medical universities, with English-taught MBBS programmes. Ugandans apply via the Ministry of Education and Sports; Ethiopians via the Ministry of Education. See our CSC guide.
- Russian Government quotas — medicine is among the most offered fields; applications run through Rossotrudnichestvo's education-in-russia.com portal each autumn.
- Türkiye Bursları — covers undergraduate medicine at Turkish universities. See our Türkiye Scholarships guide.
One warning before you pack: a foreign medical degree must be recognised by your home medical council. Check with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council or the Ethiopian health authorities before accepting a place.
Door 2: Postgraduate awards for qualified doctors
Glenmore Medical Postgraduate Scholarship — University of Edinburgh
Fully funded Master's (online and on-campus) for medical and dental graduates from Africa and other eligible regions — full tuition, with a stipend for on-campus study. One of the very few UK awards built specifically for African doctors. Full details and apply link.
HEARD ComBaScale PhD Scholarships — University of KwaZulu-Natal
Funded PhD places in health systems and implementation research, open to African candidates — ideal for doctors and public health graduates moving into research.
Commonwealth Master's & PhD Scholarships
Public health, epidemiology and biomedical fields are eligible themes. Ugandans and Ethiopians are both eligible — nominations run through national nominating agencies each autumn.
Wellcome funding
Wellcome funds health research at every career stage — including awards and prizes open to African researchers in mental health science and infectious disease. Watch our deadline roundups for open calls.
Door 3: African foundations and medical training funds
African-based funders increasingly pay for medical training at home — often a better deal than a partial scholarship abroad. Look for foundation scholarships at your own medical schools, and check our provider directory for African foundations funding health education. Ethiopian applicants should also watch Ministry of Health and regional health bureau training calls; Ugandan applicants should watch Ministry of Education and Sports scholarship advertisements in the national press.
Door 4: The strategic pivot — public health
If your goal is impact rather than the MBBS title itself, consider public health, epidemiology, health policy or biomedical sciences. These fields appear on the priority lists of Chevening, DAAD, Commonwealth and Mastercard Foundation — which means more fully funded slots and less competition than clinical medicine. Search the scholarship hub by field and level, or let the matching tool build your shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
Are there fully funded scholarships to study medicine abroad from Africa?
Dedicated undergraduate medical scholarships are rare — medicine is long and expensive, so most funders avoid it. The realistic fully funded routes are: government quota schemes (such as the Chinese Government Scholarship and Russian Government quotas, which include medical degrees), and postgraduate medical awards like the University of Edinburgh's Glenmore Medical Postgraduate Scholarship for qualified doctors and dentists.
I'm a qualified doctor in Uganda or Ethiopia. What can I apply for?
Your strongest options are postgraduate: the Glenmore Medical Postgraduate Scholarship (fully funded online and on-campus Master's at Edinburgh), health-research PhDs such as the HEARD ComBaScale scholarships at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Commonwealth Master's Scholarships in public health and medical fields.
Can I get funding for an MPH or public health degree instead?
Yes — and it's often easier. Public health, epidemiology and health policy are priority fields for Chevening, Commonwealth, DAAD and Mastercard Foundation scholarships, so competition is lower than for clinical medicine degrees.
Do medical scholarships require work experience?
Postgraduate medical awards usually do — the Glenmore, for example, targets qualified medical and dental graduates. Health-research PhDs expect a relevant Master's. Undergraduate medicine via government quotas generally does not require experience.
