Fully Funded Scholarships in China for Ethiopian Students (2026–27 Guide)
Every major fully funded route from Ethiopia to China in 2026–27 — the Chinese Government Scholarship through the Ministry of Education, university-track CSC awards, Schwarzman, Yenching, CAS-ANSO and more — with eligibility, timelines and how to apply.

China is now one of the largest scholarship destinations for Ethiopian students — and one of the most searched routes on this site. Yet most applicants only ever hear about one scholarship (the CSC) and miss four other fully funded options that are, in some years, less competitive.
This guide covers every major route. For live deadlines and apply links, keep our Ethiopia → China scholarships page and the China destination hub open in a second tab.
1. Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — the main route
The CSC is a full scholarship: tuition, free campus accommodation, a monthly stipend and comprehensive medical insurance. Ethiopian applicants have two doors:
- Type A — through the Ministry of Education. Ethiopia receives a bilateral quota each year. The Ministry announces the call, shortlists candidates and forwards nominations to the Chinese side. Watch the Ministry's announcements between roughly November and February.
- Type B — directly through a university. Many Chinese universities hold their own CSC quotas. You apply on the university's international admissions portal and quote that university's agency number on the CSC online form.
Read our full CSC application guide for the step-by-step portal walkthrough, document list and common rejection reasons.
2. The fully funded alternatives most applicants miss
Schwarzman Scholars — Tsinghua University, Beijing
A one-year, fully funded Master's in Global Affairs: tuition, accommodation, travel, a personal stipend, books and insurance. Open to all nationalities under 29 with an undergraduate degree. One of the most prestigious awards in Asia — and it closes in September, so check our September–October deadline roundup.
Yenching Academy — Peking University
A fully funded interdisciplinary Master's in China Studies: tuition, accommodation, travel and a monthly stipend. Strong fit for humanities, social science and policy graduates.
CAS-ANSO Scholarship — UCAS and USTC
Fully funded science Master's and PhD places at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Science and Technology of China, run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Alliance of International Science Organizations. Excellent for STEM applicants.
Shanghai Government Scholarship
Full and partial awards for Bachelor's, Master's and PhD study at Shanghai universities — a strong second application alongside your CSC submission.
Tsinghua MID / MIDG Programmes
English-taught Master's programmes in international development at Tsinghua with scholarship support — aimed squarely at future development leaders from the Global South.
Your application timeline for a September 2027 start

Frequently asked questions
Can Ethiopian students get a fully funded scholarship to study in China?
Yes. The main route is the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which Ethiopia receives through a bilateral quota administered by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (Type A), plus university-track applications (Type B) made directly to Chinese universities. Both cover tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend and health insurance.
How do I apply for the CSC scholarship from Ethiopia?
For Type A, watch the Ministry of Education's scholarship announcements (usually published between November and February), complete the CSC online application at campuschina.org, and submit your documents to the Ministry. For Type B, apply directly through your chosen university's international admissions portal using its agency number.
Do I need to speak Chinese?
No for many programmes — hundreds of Master's and PhD programmes are taught in English. If you take a Chinese-taught programme, the CSC normally includes a one-year preparatory Chinese language course before your degree begins.
What are the most competitive alternatives to the CSC?
Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University (one-year fully funded Master's in global affairs), the Yenching Academy at Peking University (fully funded interdisciplinary Master's), and the CAS-ANSO Scholarship for science Master's and PhD candidates. All three are open to Ethiopians and are fully funded.
