Scholarship Renewal Conditions to Check Before Accepting an Offer

A scholarship can make the first year affordable while leaving the family exposed in the second. Before accepting an undergraduate offer, work out what the student must do to keep the award, whether its value can change and when payments end.

For African students and parents comparing overseas offers, this means checking the whole degree rather than multiplying the first-year discount by four. Use the following checks alongside your scholarship shortlist.

Find the rules for your exact award and intake

Save the scholarship letter, acceptance conditions and renewal policy together. Confirm the award name, entry year, programme and annual amount. A general admissions page may describe several awards with different rules. If the offer and website disagree, ask the scholarship office to reconcile them in writing before you commit.

Turn academic requirements into measurable targets

Record the minimum GPA or percentage, whether it is annual or cumulative, which modules count and when results are assessed. Ask how failed modules, resits and repeated courses affect the calculation.

XJTLU advertises an undergraduate entry scholarship covering up to 50% of annual tuition, renewable subject to strong academic performance. Its public scholarship page does not give a numerical renewal threshold in that description. Request the applicable renewal regulations rather than treating admission grades as the renewal standard.

Separate registration from credits successfully earned

Being enrolled full-time may not satisfy the annual scholarship requirement. Build a course plan with an adviser and check what happens if a module is dropped or not passed.

USF's 2026–2027 freshman scholarship terms, which include Green & Gold waivers, generally require 30 earned USF credits each academic year and a minimum 3.0 USF GPA. The 12-credit fall and spring minimum for payment does not itself reach 30. Transfer and Advanced Placement credits do not count towards this annual renewal requirement.

Check whether renewal preserves the same amount

A scholarship may continue at a lower value. Ask whether renewal protects a fixed sum, a tuition percentage or only eligibility for another assessment. Confirm how any tuition increase affects the family's contribution.

Lakehead's 2027–2028 international entrance awards include CAD 10,000 annually, renewable with a 90% annual average. If the university average falls to 80.0–89.9%, the award becomes CAD 7,500 annually for the remaining scholarship term. Its CAD 6,000 entrance award is first-year-only. Those are different multiyear commitments, despite appearing on the same page.

Test interruptions and the final year

Ask what happens during a medical leave, deferred start, placement year or reduced course load. Does the award pause, expire or require approval before the interruption? Do unused semesters remain available?

Lakehead caps its entrance scholarship term at four academic years or the first degree, whichever comes first. Do not assume an extra year caused by a programme change will be funded. USF expects consecutive fall and spring payments, and its terms explain when an unpaid semester is forfeited even if the student later meets renewal requirements. See the linked institutional policies above.

Confirm changes before making them

Ask about changing major, campus, study location or degree route before submitting the change. Request confirmation of both eligibility and the revised amount.

USF's Green & Gold Talent Waiver requires the recipient to remain a College of The Arts major. That condition is specific to that waiver; it should not be applied to every Green & Gold award.

Know the reporting and appeal process

Record required forms, evidence, review dates and the office responsible. USF requires international students to document citizenship or visa status; missing documentation can cancel the scholarship. Its policy also describes summer reassessment and petitions for specified circumstances. An appeal route is not a promise of reinstatement.

Make one family decision sheet

Before paying an acceptance deposit, list each year's expected costs and confirmed award, the renewal targets, the final funded term and unresolved questions. Add a second scenario with reduced or lost funding. Discuss whether the family could cover that gap without relying on an unconfirmed future scholarship.

Send the unresolved questions to the scholarship office and keep its written reply with the offer. Accept with a workable degree-length plan, not just an attractive first-year figure.
