Are you into game and tech development? If you’re looking to broaden prospects within the tech community, you might want to consider applying for the Google Solution Challenge 2022!
The 2022 Solution Challenge is a contest with the mission of solving one or more of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals using Google technology.
The Solution Challenge is open to members of Google Developer Student Clubs. Join a Google Developer Student Club (GDSC) [on the GDSC community page](https://gdsc.community.dev/).
**Application deadline:** March 31, 2022
## Benefits of the Google Solution Challenge 2022
The top 50 teams to make it into the Google Solution Challenge roster shall win a T-shirt, certificate, and mentorship from Googlers and other experts.
Meanwhile, the top 10 finalists shall receive a **$1,000** cash prize per team member, swag, certificate, mentorship from Google, and a feature in the Google Developers Blog and Demo Day livestream.
Lastly, the top 3 winners for the Google Solution Challenge shall earn a **$3,000** cash prize per team member, swag, certificate, mentorship from Google, and a feature in the Google Developers Blog and Demo Day livestream.
## Eligibility Criteria
Please note: Each solution is evaluated on a scale of 1 to 100.
IMPACT \[60 points\]
- Does the entry establish a clear challenge focused on one or more of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals? Is it explained in a clear manner with specific Sustainable Development Goal targets they are looking to solve for? \[10\]
- How effectively does the solution address the challenge identified by the team? \[20\]
- Is there evidence of a next step? Does the team display a plan for future extension if they were to continue? \[10\]
- Is there evidence that the solution has been thoroughly tested with real users? \[10\]
- Is there evidence that the solution was iterated upon based on user feedback? \[10\]
TECHNOLOGY \[40 points\]
- Does the solution implement all the technical components needed to solve the challenge? \[10\]
- Has the team clearly explained what Google technology they used, why, and included guidance on how to run their code? \[10\]
- Does the video demonstration show the working solution and how a user will interact with the solution?
Does the demonstration highlight how Google’s technologies are implemented and also mention the value the technology provides the users? \[10\]
- Has the team made effective product and technical decisions for their solution? \[10\]

Eligibility criteria
Always cross-check eligibility against the sponsor's official site before applying — sponsor rules can change between intakes.
- Citizen or permanent resident of an eligible African country
- Strong academic record — typically a minimum GPA equivalent to a UK 2:1 / US 3.3
- English-language proficiency demonstrated by IELTS, TOEFL or an MOI letter
- Two academic or professional references able to speak to your potential
Required documents
A planning baseline drawn from how 90%+ of African scholarship sponsors structure their checklist. The sponsor's portal is the source of truth for any single application.
- Valid international passport (bio page scan)
- Most recent academic transcripts (sealed or e-verified copies)
- Curriculum vitae / résumé (1–2 pages, reverse-chronological)
- Personal statement or motivation letter (500–1,000 words, tailored to the sponsor)
- Two to three reference letters (academic for students, professional for working applicants)
- Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo) — Medium-of-Instruction letter may substitute for Anglophone-Africa graduates
- Passport-sized photograph meeting ICAO biometric standards
- Country-of-origin proof (national ID or birth certificate) — required by many Africa-focused funders
Deadline timeline
The sponsor has not published a fixed deadline yet. Use the milestones below as a generic 12-month plan; substitute dates once the intake window opens.
- 12 months out
Register for tests (IELTS/TOEFL/SAT/GRE), shortlist 3–5 universities, identify referees.
- 6 months out
Sit your tests, draft a personal statement, request transcripts and confirm reference letters.
- 3 months out
Finalise essays, upload supporting documents, complete the online application portal.
- 1 month out
Final review, double-check uploaded files, submit a week before the deadline to avoid portal issues.

Submit by 23:59 in the sponsor's stated time zone — usually local to the sponsor, not your country.
Frequently asked questions
Who can apply for the Google Solution Challenge 2022?+
Applicants must be eligible African nationals applying at the the stated level level, meet the academic and English-language requirements set by Various, and be able to relocate to the host country for the duration of the programme.
Is the Google Solution Challenge 2022 fully funded?+
Funding model: Funding type varies — check the official site. Where listed as fully funded, the award typically covers tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance and round-trip airfare. Always confirm the latest funding breakdown on the sponsor's official page.
When is the application deadline?+
