About this scholarship

![Fully Funded Scholarship for African Freshmen](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Berea-3.png) [starportillo](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/author/beyondstellar/) [June 9, 2021August 3, 2021](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/2021/06/09/) Berea College is the only one of America’s top colleges that implements a [No-Tuition Promise](https://www.berea.edu/give/no-tuition/) for every enrolled student. The school also has a long history of welcoming students of all nationalities, religious faiths, races, and ethnicities. Annually, they offer full funding for all of its international students on their first year of enrollment through a combination of financial aid and scholarships. This offsets the costs of tuition, room, board, and fees. All international students are provided with a paid, on-campus job through the college’s [Work Program](https://www.berea.edu/labor-program-office/visitors/) throughout the academic year. Students may use their wages (an estimated $2,000 the first year) to cover personal expenses. Furthermore, the institution provides summer jobs for international students to meet the expenses during their subsequent college years. Overall, students are expected to save $1,000 per year. ![](https://i0.wp.com/scholarshipsforafricans.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/BEREA-1-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C682&ssl=1)Photo by **[cottonbro](https://www.pexels.com/@cottonbro?utm_content=attributionCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pexels)** from **[Pexels](https://www.pexels.com/photo/man-in-yellow-sweater-holding-book-beside-woman-in-brown-sweater-6334577/?utm_content=attributionCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pexels)** ### Eligibility Admission to the college is competitive, given the number of applications they receive yearly. Eligibility criteria

Always cross-check eligibility against the sponsor's official site before applying — sponsor rules can change between intakes.

  • Citizen or permanent resident of an eligible African country
  • Willing to study in America
  • Strong academic record — typically a minimum GPA equivalent to a UK 2:1 / US 3.3
  • English-language proficiency demonstrated by IELTS, TOEFL or an MOI letter
  • Two academic or professional references able to speak to your potential
  • Demonstrated financial need (most fully funded sponsors verify household income)

Required documents

A planning baseline drawn from how 90%+ of African scholarship sponsors structure their checklist. The sponsor's portal is the source of truth for any single application.

  • Valid international passport (bio page scan)
  • Most recent academic transcripts (sealed or e-verified copies)
  • Curriculum vitae / résumé (1–2 pages, reverse-chronological)
  • Personal statement or motivation letter (500–1,000 words, tailored to the sponsor)
  • Two to three reference letters (academic for students, professional for working applicants)
  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo) — Medium-of-Instruction letter may substitute for Anglophone-Africa graduates
  • Passport-sized photograph meeting ICAO biometric standards
  • Financial-need declaration or family-income statement (sponsor-specific template)
  • Country-of-origin proof (national ID or birth certificate) — required by many Africa-focused funders

Deadline timeline

The sponsor has not published a fixed deadline yet. Use the milestones below as a generic 12-month plan; substitute dates once the intake window opens.

  1. 12 months out

Register for tests (IELTS/TOEFL/SAT/GRE), shortlist 3–5 universities, identify referees.

  2. 6 months out

Sit your tests, draft a personal statement, request transcripts and confirm reference letters.

  3. 3 months out

Finalise essays, upload supporting documents, complete the online application portal.

  4. 1 month out

Final review, double-check uploaded files, submit a week before the deadline to avoid portal issues.

  5. Application deadline

Submit by 23:59 in the sponsor's stated time zone — usually local to the sponsor, not your country.
