Lakehead Entrance Scholarships: Academic Thresholds and Remaining Costs
Read Lakehead's entrance-award tiers as annual support, check renewal conditions, and build a realistic budget for the costs the scholarship leaves behind.

Before comparing an entrance scholarship with another university's offer, turn it into a year-by-year funding plan. The useful questions are how much reduces this year's bill, what must happen for the award to continue, and who can meet the balance. A headline total alone cannot answer them.
For an African applicant considering Lakehead, start with the university's assessment and written offer, then build the budget around your programme and campus. Do not convert a school result yourself and treat the result as a confirmed award.
Read the current award grid
Lakehead's published 2027–2028 scheme considers non-Canadian citizens entering from high school or transferring from an international college or university. Eligible entrants join years 1–3 of an undergraduate degree lasting at least four years. Consideration is automatic; offers appear in the acceptance letter.
The Canadian-equivalent admission averages, with the published IB alternatives, are:
- 90% or above / IB 35+: CAD10,000 annually, up to CAD40,000.
- 80%–89.9% / IB 30–34: CAD7,500 annually, up to CAD30,000.
- 75%–79.9% / IB 28–29: CAD6,000 for year one only.
The highest tier renews at a 90% university average; falling to 80%–89.9% reduces subsequent annual awards to CAD7,500. The middle tier requires 80% annually. Funding ends after four academic years or the first degree, whichever comes first. A switch to domestic-fee status triggers reassessment.
The award does not cover Academic English programme costs. After successful completion, it applies to undergraduate first-year tuition. African nationality alone guarantees neither admission nor an award; the relevant international-entry conditions still apply. Values and criteria can change. Lakehead's official scholarship terms
Match the budget to the right academic year
At our 19 October 2026 check, Lakehead's fees guide still presented 2026–2027 tuition, although the scholarship grid covered the following academic year. The university says tuition changes each spring. Treat an older fee schedule as a planning reference, not a final quote for a later intake. Ancillary charges also vary by campus and programme. Lakehead dates and fees
Create a cost sheet with separate lines for tuition, ancillary charges, health coverage, accommodation, food, books, travel and personal spending. Put the source year beside every figure. Mark a missing price “awaiting confirmation”, rather than entering zero and making the plan look affordable.
Lakehead's undergraduate estimator covers September to April. Its residence options differ: some include compulsory meal plans while others exclude food. Check what your housing figure contains before adding groceries or meals, and budget separately for any additional months you expect to stay. Lakehead's cost and housing guidance
Calculate the gap without counting the award twice
Use this working calculation for each academic year: total expected costs, minus that year's confirmed scholarship, minus other confirmed support, equals the amount still to fund.
Here is an arithmetic illustration, not a Lakehead price quote. If your independently prepared first-year budget were CAD45,000 and your written award provided CAD10,000 that year, CAD35,000 would remain before other support. Do not subtract a multi-year headline total from one year's expenses. If a fee statement already shows a scholarship credit, do not deduct it again in your spreadsheet.
Keep tuition reduction separate from cash available for rent and travel. Ask when the award will appear on the student account, which payment is due before that credit, and whether another award changes its value. Record the answer beside the relevant bill.
Test the less comfortable scenario
Prepare one budget using the expected renewal and another using less scholarship support. This is a stress test, not a prediction that the student will struggle. It shows whether the family could handle a changed result without making an urgent promise it cannot keep.
For a transfer applicant, ask how many funded years remain after credit assessment. For any applicant, separate an expected future contribution from money already committed. Check whether the same supporter is also paying other education or household costs.
Resolve these points before committing
Ask Lakehead to confirm the award amount and remaining duration in your individual offer, any conditions attached to it, and the applicable fee estimate for your intake. Check admission, document, acceptance and payment dates separately; automatic scholarship consideration does not remove those steps. Lakehead directs applicants to its deadline guidance and the dates in their acceptance letters. Official dates and fees guide
Finish with a named source for every part of the remaining cost and a date when the money will be available. If the plan still depends on an unawarded scholarship, leave that gap visible while comparing alternatives.
