UK Student visa guide for African students (2026)
Once your scholarship is confirmed, the Student visa is the only thing standing between you and your UK campus. Here is exactly what to do, in order, with the realistic costs and timing.
Who needs a UK Student visa
Every African national needs a Student visa to study a full-time course in the UK that lasts longer than 6 months. Short courses (under 6 months) use the Standard Visitor route instead.
1. Get your CAS
After you firmly accept your university place, the institution issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a unique reference number. You cannot apply for the visa without it. CAS is typically released 6 months before your course start date.
2. Take a UKVI-approved TB test
All applicants from Africa must complete a tuberculosis test at a UKVI-approved clinic and submit the certificate with the visa application. Cost: £80–£200 depending on country. Certificates are valid for 6 months.
3. Show proof of funds
You must hold the money for at least 28 consecutive days in a bank account in your name (or a parent's, with a consent letter) ending no more than 31 days before you apply:
- London courses: £1,483/month × course months (up to 9 months) = up to £13,347
- Outside London: £1,136/month × course months (up to 9 months) = up to £10,224
- Plus any unpaid tuition for year 1
If your scholarship covers tuition and living costs, your award letter replaces the bank statement requirement — but make sure the letter explicitly states the amounts and duration.
4. Pay the IHS and visa fee
- Visa fee: £524 from outside the UK
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year of your visa — paid up front. This gives you full NHS access.
Most fully funded scholarships reimburse both, but check your award letter.
5. ATAS (some STEM PhDs only)
Certain research-level STEM subjects (engineering, materials, advanced physics, computer security) require Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance before your CAS can be issued. Apply at least 6 weeks early.
6. Submit online + biometrics
Apply online at gov.uk/student-visa, then book a biometrics appointment at the nearest visa application centre (VFS or TLS). Standard processing is 3 weeks from biometrics — pay extra for priority (5 working days) or super-priority (next day) where available.
7. Pick up your BRP in the UK
Your visa vignette in your passport is valid for 90 days to enter the UK. Within 10 days of arrival, collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the post office named on your decision letter.
After you graduate: the Graduate Route
After completing your degree at a UK Higher Education Provider with a compliance track record, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa to stay and work in the UK at any skill level — 2 years for an undergraduate or Master's, 3 years for a PhD. Apply before your Student visa expires; there is no extension.
Common reasons African applicants are refused
- Funds held for fewer than 28 consecutive days
- TB certificate expired before the decision date
- CAS issued for a different course than the one applied for
- Inconsistent travel history or undisclosed prior refusals
