## About the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne
EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) is a research institute and university focusing in natural sciences and engineering in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Currently housing over 10,000 students, the EPFL is lauded for its extreme focus on scientific research. In fact, it is one of the only universities to run a nuclear reactor, a fusion reactor, a Gene/Q Supercomputer, and have P3 bio-hazard facilities.
There are students from 112 different countries here, however, women make up only 27% of the student body as of 2014. On-campus, there are numerous student-run organizations and groups that provide social and recreational possibilities.
Students can stay physically active while studying thanks to a variety of sports and recreational facilities. EPFL also has a vibrant student media, which publishes the monthly publication Flash and broadcasts on the student radio station on a daily basis.
The arts are also of high importance on campus, with the university hosting many yearly music festivals each year. The largest is the Balélec Festival, which attracts 15,000 visitors to the campus for 30 concerts.
