About the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes – Orange Knowledge Programme Scholarships for Africans and Other International Students (2026)

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) has ushered in a new phase of beneficial scholarships for Africans and other international students through the Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP). With the goal of advancing the development of international student knowledge and capacity, the OKP offers funding for short courses and master’s programs in the Netherlands. ## Orange Knowledge Programme Details On July 1, 2017, the NFP entered a new phase as a new programme under the name Kennisontwikkelings programma (KOP). In English, this can be translated to the Orange Knowledge Programme. The OKP, in turn, focuses on giving better higher and vocational education for all. Initially, the NFP was designed to foster capacity building within organizations in 62 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. Overall, the NFP wants to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower and to do so within the framework of sustainable capacity-building directed towards reducing poverty in developing countries. This new five-year programme , on the other hand, is initiated and funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and managed by Nuffic, which is the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education. Additionally, these scholarships for Africans and other international students come in either short courses (with a duration period of 2 weeks to 12 months), or master’s programs (with a duration period of 12-24 months). ## Eligibility for the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes The Orange Knowledge Programme individual scholarships are open to mid-career professionals, who are nationals of – and living and working in – the following countries: - Afghanistan - Bangladesh - Benin - Burkina Faso - Burundi - Colombia - Congo (DRC) - Egypt - Ethiopia - Ghana - Guatemala - Guinea - Iraq - Jordan - Kenya - Lebanon - Liberia - Mali - Mozambique - Myanmar - Niger - Nigeria - Palestinian Territories - Rwanda - Senegal - Sierra Leone - Somalia - South Africa - South Sudan - Sudan - Suriname - Tanzania - Tunisia - Uganda - Vietnam - Yemen - Zambia ## How Can International Students Apply? How to apply for the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes – Orange Knowledge Programme Scholarships for Africans and Other International Students 2026

A practical, sponsor-agnostic sequence used by >95% of international scholarship applicants. Adapt to the sponsor's specific portal — the order rarely changes.

  1. 1
Confirm eligibility on the official site

Open https://www.nuffic.nl/en/international/international-programmes and verify the sponsor's stated criteria match your profile — currently: "Open to African students; specific eligibility (nationality, age, academic record, field of study) varies by program — see the official site for full requirements.". Sponsor rules change between intakes, so always confirm against the live call.

  2. 2
Secure a study place or admission offer

Apply to the host university or programme first where required, and obtain a conditional admission letter. A growing number of sponsors only fund applicants who already hold an offer.

  3. 3
Sit required tests and gather documents

Register for IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo (or SAT / GRE where required), request official transcripts, brief two or three referees, and prepare passport and identity documents at high resolution.

  4. 4
    Draft your essays and statements

Write a 500–1,000-word personal statement and any additional essays the sponsor specifies. Anchor each essay in concrete examples and tie your goals back to the sponsor's mission.

  5. 5
    Complete the online application

Create an account on https://www.nuffic.nl/en/international/international-programmes, fill in every field, and upload the required documents in the formats specified (PDF, max file size, single-file vs multi-file). Save progress frequently — most portals time out after 30–60 minutes.

  6. 6
Submit by Varies — check official site (aim 7 days early)

Sponsor portals routinely slow or fail in the final 24 hours. Submit early, download the confirmation receipt, and screenshot the submission timestamp. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

  7. 7
    Prepare for shortlist interviews

If shortlisted, Nuffic / Orange Knowledge Programme will contact you within 4–12 weeks. Re-read your essays, rehearse 3–5 likely questions out loud, and confirm your time zone for any video interview.
