About this scholarship

## Overview The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP) provides an opportunity for South African university faculty or research institute professionals to conduct research in their field of expertise at a U.S. academic or research Institution. The program duration is 3 to 9 months, with research programs commencing between August 1, 2027, and March 31, 2028, and to be completed by December 31, 2028. The aim of the research grant is to enable scholars to perform high-level research in the U.S. that will strengthen academic programs or curricula at their home institution in South Africa. ## Eligibility * Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in their fields at the time of application. Preference is given to individuals with a minimum of three years of university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record. * Applicants must be South African citizens OR permanent residents with a minimum of five years of permanent residency status in South Africa. Dual S.A./U.S. citizens are not eligible. * The program is open to scholars in all disciplines except clinical medical research involving patient contact. * Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright scholar grant or have had only limited experience in the U.S. * Applicants must have sufficient English proficiency, although TOEFL exams are not required. * Applicants must be in good health. ## Benefits * Monthly stipend based on the cost of living at the research site. * Round trip airfare for the scholar. * Excess baggage allowance for return travel. * Professional allowance for books, conferences, and seminars. * Settling-in allowance. * Primary medical insurance coverage for the scholar. * Visa application fee. ## How to apply Applications are submitted through an online application system. Application components include: * A well-written research proposal with a clear methodology. * Three confidential letters of reference, uploaded by the referees through the online system. * A Letter of Invitation from a U.S. host institution is strongly encouraged and preferred, but not required. Applicants are discouraged from requesting affiliation with an alma mater. If applicants are unfamiliar with U.S. institutions, the Fulbright Program can identify a suitable host institution. Laboratory fees are not part of the standard benefits package and are awarded on a limited, case-by-case basis, subject to funding availability. Virtual Information Sessions are scheduled for: * May 15, 2026: 09:00-10:00 * June 11, 2026: 12:00-13:00 * July 15, 2026: 14:00-15:00 The application link is [https://apply.iie.org/fvsp2027](https://apply.iie.org/fvsp2027).

Required documents

A planning baseline drawn from how 90%+ of African scholarship sponsors structure their checklist. The sponsor's portal is the source of truth for any single application.

  • Valid international passport (bio page scan)
  • Most recent academic transcripts (sealed or e-verified copies)
  • Curriculum vitae / résumé (1–2 pages, reverse-chronological)
  • Personal statement or motivation letter (500–1,000 words, tailored to the sponsor)
  • Two to three reference letters (academic for students, professional for working applicants)
  • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo) — Medium-of-Instruction letter may substitute for Anglophone-Africa graduates

How to apply

A practical, sponsor-agnostic sequence used by >95% of international scholarship applicants. Adapt to the sponsor's specific portal — the order rarely changes.

  1. 1
Confirm eligibility on the official site

Open https://za.usembassy.gov/fulbright-south-african-research-scholar-program/ and verify your country, level of study and English-language status against the current call. Sponsor rules change between intakes — never rely on third-party summaries alone.

  2. 2
Secure a study place or admission offer

Apply to the host university or programme first where required, and obtain a conditional admission letter. A growing number of sponsors only fund applicants who already hold an offer.

  3. 3
Sit required tests and gather documents

Register for IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo (or SAT / GRE where required), request official transcripts, brief two or three referees, and prepare passport and identity documents at high resolution.

  4. 4
    Draft your essays and statements

Write a 500–1,000-word personal statement and any additional essays the sponsor specifies. Anchor each essay in concrete examples and tie your goals back to the sponsor's mission.

  5. 5
    Complete the online application

Create an account on https://za.usembassy.gov/fulbright-south-african-research-scholar-program/, fill in every field, and upload the required documents in the formats specified (PDF, max file size, single-file vs multi-file). Save progress frequently — most portals time out after 30–60 minutes.

  6. 6
Submit at least one week before the deadline

Sponsor portals routinely slow or fail in the final 24 hours. Submit early, download the confirmation receipt, and screenshot the submission timestamp. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

  7. 7
    Prepare for shortlist interviews

If shortlisted, U.S. Embassy & Consulates in South Africa will contact you within 4–12 weeks. Re-read your essays, rehearse 3–5 likely questions out loud, and confirm your time zone for any video interview.

Deadline timeline

Working backwards from the sponsor's stated deadline (August 30, 2026). Dates assume a smooth, single-attempt timeline — start earlier where you can.

  1. 12 months out
    4 Sept 2025

Register for tests (IELTS/TOEFL/SAT/GRE), shortlist 3–5 universities, identify referees.

  2. 6 months out
    3 Mar 2026

Sit your tests, draft a personal statement, request transcripts and confirm reference letters.

  3. 3 months out
    1 Jun 2026

Finalise essays, upload supporting documents, complete the online application portal.

  4. 1 month out
    31 Jul 2026

Final review, double-check uploaded files, submit a week before the deadline to avoid portal issues.

  5. Application deadline
    30 Aug 2026

Submit by 23:59 in the sponsor's stated time zone — usually local to the sponsor, not your country.
