About the Ezera Research Fellowships for African PhD Students (2026)

**An endowment** has been established in memory of Emeka Kalu Ezera to support graduate students from African countries south of the Sahara at the University of California at Berkeley. The funds from the endowment are assigned to the Center for African Studies to aid student scholars at the graduate level concentrating in African Studies. Funds may be requested for maintenance, travel, or research costs, as appropriate to enhance pre-dissertation and dissertation research on Africa. Ezera funds may be used to supplement, but not substitute for, other grants. Students are encouraged to apply to other sources, including the [Rocca grant](http://africa.berkeley.edu/fellowships/Rocca.php). **Application deadline:** April 11, 2022 ### Table of contents - [Benefits of the Ezera Research Fellowship](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/ezera-research-fellowships-for-african-phd-students/#h-benefits-of-the-ezera-research-fellowship) - [Eligibility Criteria for African PhD Students](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/ezera-research-fellowships-for-african-phd-students/#h-eligibility-criteria-for-african-phd-students) - [How to Apply](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/ezera-research-fellowships-for-african-phd-students/#h-how-to-apply) * * * Stay in the loop! In making awards, the Center adheres to the cap on stipends set by the Graduate Division, which in 2021 is $40,000 – combined for all fellowships awarded. For administrative purposes, the Ezera competition is combined with the **[Rocca Fellowship](https://africa.berkeley.edu/rocca-dissertation-research)** competition. Ezera recipients may also receive funds from the Rocca endowment. Only one application is necessary. If you are applying for the Emeka Kalu Ezera fellowship, indicate which African country you are from in the appropriate space on the application. Read [The Art of Writing Proposals](http://www.ssrc.org/publications/view/7A9CB4F4-815F-DE11-BD80-001CC477EC70/) (Pzreworski & Saloman) for tips on your application. ## Eligibility Criteria for African PhD Students The Ezera Fellowship gives priority to graduate students from West Africa who show exceptional promise of advancing scholarship in African Studies in the social sciences, humanities, and public policy and who demonstrate strong leadership potential. Students from other African regions are eligible and are encouraged to apply. Students must have been accepted for admission at the University of California at Berkeley when they apply and must be enrolled before funds may be dispersed to them. The fellowship is not available to students who are permanent residents or citizens of the United States. A total of no more than two years of support will be provided to a recipient of this fellowship; applications for the second year of support will be considered de novo along with other applications for that year. See the [application](https://africa.berkeley.edu/rocca-ezera-fellowship) for details. ## How to Apply For more information regarding this opportunity, please visit the [official scholarship website](https://africa.berkeley.edu/ezera-research-african-students). * * * _brought to you by Scholarships for Africans_ [**Scholarships for Africans**](https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/) is a premier scholarship information blog committed to bringing more opportunities for Africans globally. How to apply for the Ezera Research Fellowships for African PhD Students 2026

A practical, sponsor-agnostic sequence used by >95% of international scholarship applicants. Adapt to the sponsor's specific portal — the order rarely changes.

  1. 1
Confirm eligibility on the official site

Open https://africa.berkeley.edu/ezera-research-african-students and verify the sponsor's stated criteria match your profile — currently: "African PhD students conducting research in fields aligned with the Ezera Foundation's priorities.". Sponsor rules change between intakes, so always confirm against the live call.

  2. 2
Secure a study place or admission offer

Identify a supervisor whose research aligns with yours, exchange emails, and either obtain a conditional offer or confirmation that they will host your project. Many Various awards require this before the funding application opens.

  3. 3
Sit required tests and gather documents

Register for IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo (or SAT / GRE where required), request official transcripts, brief two or three referees, and prepare passport and identity documents at high resolution.

  4. 4
    Draft your essays and statements

Write a focused 1,000–2,000-word research proposal and a separate personal statement. Tailor every paragraph to the sponsor's stated priorities — generic recycled essays are the most common reason strong applicants are rejected.

  5. 5
    Complete the online application

Create an account on https://africa.berkeley.edu/ezera-research-african-students, fill in every field, and upload the required documents in the formats specified (PDF, max file size, single-file vs multi-file). Save progress frequently — most portals time out after 30–60 minutes.

  6. 6
Submit by Annual call (varies) (aim 7 days early)

Sponsor portals routinely slow or fail in the final 24 hours. Submit early, download the confirmation receipt, and screenshot the submission timestamp. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

  7. 7
    Prepare for shortlist interviews

If shortlisted, Various will contact you within 4–12 weeks. Re-read your essays, rehearse 3–5 likely questions out loud, and confirm your time zone for any video interview.

Ezera Research Fellowships for African PhD Students deadline & application timeline

The sponsor has not published a fixed deadline yet. Use the milestones below as a generic 12-month plan; substitute dates once the intake window opens.

Finalise essays, upload supporting documents, complete the online application portal.

  4. 1 month out

Final review, double-check uploaded files, submit a week before the deadline to avoid portal issues.

  5. Application deadline
