The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program awards $50,000 per year to Canadian and international scholars pursuing doctoral study in Canada for the fields of social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, or health.
Launched in 2008 by the government of Canada, the Vanier CGS program eyes potential scholars who have excellent leadership skills and high standards in terms of scholarly achievement.
Through the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program, the Canadian government expects to strengthen the country’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students. In addition, they aim to establish study in Canada as a pillar of research, innovation, and higher learning worldwide.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program details
The Vanier CGS program awards up to 166 scholarships annually, with an estimated 500 scholarships active at any time.
A value of $50,000 per year is distributed equally between the three federal granting agencies of Canada, namely:
- The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Selection Criteria and Nomination Process
In order to be qualified for the said opportunity to pursue a doctoral study in Canada, candidates must first be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota to host Vanier scholars. Therefore, interested parties must seek a nomination from the chosen institution where they want to study.
Nominations are evaluated and selected based on the following three criteria, weighted equally:
- Academic Excellence
- Research Potential
- Leadership (Potential and Demonstrated Ability)
