Benefits of the Wageningen University & Research Africa Talent Program

Seven (7) fully-funded scholarships weighed as a four-year, full-time PhD position or the financial equivalent position of a postdoc (2-3 years) shall be given to talented African scientists.

The WUR Africa Talent Program shall be undertaken at the Wageningen Graduate School in The Netherlands.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Scholars

In order to qualify for a scholarship at the Wageningen University & Research, please make sure to read the eligibility criteria found below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Only Master and PhD graduates with an African nationality will be considered for the opportunity.

The selection committee would like to receive applications from countries across the African continent and especially encourages female candidates to apply.

You are only eligible for a PhD position if you meet the entry requirements of Wageningen University for a PhD. If a candidate does not have a master’s degree yet, but will obtain one in the near future this can be stated in the application. In case an application for a postdoc position is made, candidates must have a recognized doctoral degree or a set date of PhD award in the near future. In both cases the applicant must be fluent in spoken and written scientific English.

Only a professor* at Wageningen University can submit an application to the Africa Talent Program. Therefore, you will have to find a Wageningen professor who will endorse your application (list of chair groups and contact information can be found here). A professor of Wageningen University may only submit one application.

*When the word ‘professor’ is used, persons who have the ius promovendi at Wageningen University are meant.

It is up to the talented scientist to provide the appropriate documentation that could convince the selection committee that you are a suitable candidate for the African Talent Program. Please use the prescribed format.

Applications will first be pre-evaluated by an appropriate Wageningen graduate school (deadline is on June 1, 2022) with each of the six graduate schools allowed to submit a maximum of three applications. Individual graduate schools may have additional requirements.

Furthermore, we advise that you contact the graduate school-related to your research area ahead of time due to the limited scholarship slots. Please take note that graduate school applicants have to send their entries in one compiled PDF file to [email protected] before June 13, 2022.
