Applications for the Okwui Enwezor Postdoctoral Fellow in Visual Culture, Performance Studies, and Critical Humanities; Fatema Mernissi Postdoctoral Fellow in Social and Cultural Studies; and Ali A. Mazrui Senior Fellow in Global African Studies are all welcome at the Africa Institute.

The Africa Institute is accepting applications for its fellowship program, which includes a one-year senior fellowship named after the late eminent African studies professor Ali A. Mazrui, as well as two postdoctoral fellowships named after the late eminent art historian and curator Okwui Enwezor and the late world-renowned Moroccan feminist scholar Fatema Mernissi.

The Research Fellowships Program provides the opportunity for both junior and senior scholars of African and African diaspora studies to focus on a research project and participate in ongoing scholarly and intellectual activities during their residency at the Institute.

Benefits of the Africa Institute Postdoctoral Fellowships

During their time at the Institute, junior and senior researchers of African and African diaspora studies can focus on a research project and participate in ongoing scholarly and intellectual activities through the Institute Research Fellowships Program. Fellows will also have the opportunity to meet with scholars and academics in their field of study during their residency.

Eligibility Criteria for African Scholars

The fellowship is open to emerging scholars in the field of social sciences with specific emphasis on gender, feminism and cultural studies, and visual cultures, and their intersection with African and African diaspora studies. 

  • The applicant must hold a PhD awarded within the last five years.
  • Applications should include a CV and cover letter indicating the proposed research project, in addition to two published, or unpublished, writing samples.
  • The proposal must be submitted in English through The Africa Institute application email address: [email protected] with subject line indicating “Name of Fellowship.”

How to Apply for the Opportunity

The Institute welcomes interested scholars to apply by July 15, 2022, for fellowships commencing in September 2021. Applications should include a CV and cover letter indicating the proposed research project, in addition to a writing sample or publication, directed to [email protected].
