1. University of Bologna
The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is said to be the oldest university in the world.

2. Sapienza University of Rome
Pope Boniface VIII founded Rome’s Sapienza University in 1303; it is the city’s oldest university.
It is also Europe’s largest university, with over 115,000 students, including nearly 9,000 foreign students, and nearly 4,000 academic staff. It provides 280-degree programs and 200 specialty courses across 63 departments, as well as 50 libraries for student use (the most of any Italian university) and 18 museums.
3. Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa
The Pisa University system includes the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, the University of Pisa, and the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies.
The university was formed in 1810 as a part of the Paris-based École Normale Supérieure.
It still functions from its original location, Palazzo della Carovana, in Pisa’s historic center, and offers programs in both the humanities and sciences.
4. University of Padua
The University of Padua was established in 1222 as a law school. It is Italy’s second-oldest university and the world’s fifth oldest.
There are 32 departments and eight schools at the university. It also features a university hospital, a museum, and 14 resident halls.
The University of Padua is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of historical research universities that also includes Trinity College Dublin, Heidelberg University, KU Leuven, and the University of Salamanca.
5. Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies – Pisa
Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies – Pisa is a public university that focuses on applied sciences.
The institution offers a demanding entrance exam, and students who pass with honors and exhibit competency in two languages are eligible to study for free. As a result, the institution has an extremely tiny student body, with less than 1,000 students enrolled.
Degrees are available at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in business sciences, economic sciences, legal sciences, political sciences, agricultural sciences, medical sciences, industrial engineering, and information engineering.
