The Young African Phosphorus Fellowship will be giving out awards worth $5,000 to African researchers working in either a National Agricultural Research and Extension System (NARES) institution or an African university.
Through the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI), the Young African Phosphorus Fellowship came to fruition. The award was created to encourage scientific programs relevant to understanding and improving phosphorus management in African agro-ecosystems.

What is the African Plant Nutrition Institute?
The African Plant Nutrition Institute is a not-for-profit research and education organization based in Benguérir, Morocco with additional offices located in Settat, Morocco; Nairobi, Kenya; and Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
APNI has the ultimate mission is of enhanced plant nutrition for a resilient and food secure Africa.
Eligible African researchers
In order to qualify for the said fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- First and foremost, the interested parties must be scientists working at an African NARES institution or university. Furthermore, they should be aged 40 or younger at the time of application are eligible for the awards.
- The scientists must submit a creative proposal that addresses current knowledge gaps or synthesizes existing information leading to improved phosphorus management. Applicants must also include a description of how the award will be used (such as to support research activities and/or support travel) to achieve the proposal objectives.
- Lastly, the aspiring awardees could also provide evidence of any scientific partnerships and institutional collaboration to strengthen their application.
- Only scientists from African countries will only be accepted. Females are especially encouraged to apply.
How to Apply for the Young African Phosphorus Fellowship
To begin the application process, interested researchers are required to submit the following requirements in English or French:
- A description of how the fellowship will lead to improved understanding of phosphorus management in agricultural systems.
- Electronic copy of two letters of support, one of which must be from the applicant’s supervisor. Furthermore, these letters should be signed and written on official letterhead. It must also include the phone number and e-mail addresses of the letter sender.
- A resume with the applicant’s date of birth, academic degrees, and any relevant publications dealing with phosphorus behavior in soil, water, or plants.
- By the end of this award for African researchers, participants will be tasked to make a short report that outlines how the funds were used to support the outcomes of the proposal.
