How to apply to the UK scholarships from Ghana

  1. 1. Know the main routes

Most Ghanaian students fund UK study through Chevening (one-year master's), Commonwealth Scholarships (master's and PhD, nominated through national agencies or universities), and university awards such as GREAT or vice-chancellor's scholarships. Each listing below says which route it uses.

  2. 2. Apply for admission early

Most UK scholarships need a university offer, or applications to two or three courses. Apply to universities in autumn, a year before you intend to start — some award deadlines fall before the course application closes.

  3. 3. English language

Many UK universities accept a letter showing English was your medium of instruction, but some courses and the UKVI rules still ask for IELTS (or an approved alternative). Check the course page, not just the scholarship.

  4. 4. Prepare your documents

Have certified transcripts and degree certificates, two references, a passport valid for your full course, and a personal statement that links your study plan to Ghana's development.

  5. 5. TB test, CAS and Student visa

Ghana is on the UK's tuberculosis-testing list, so you need a TB certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic. After accepting your offer you receive a CAS number; apply online for the Student visa, pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, and give biometrics at a UK visa application centre.

  6. 6. Plan arrival and funding gaps

Check what your award covers — fees, stipend, flights, visa costs. Collect your BRP or eVisa details on arrival and register with a GP. Budget for the first month before your stipend arrives.

Rules change each year — always confirm on chevening.org and on each university's scholarship page.
