Commonwealth Startup Fellowship

Critères d'éligibilité

To be eligible for this fellowship, candidates must: Be of at least graduate level; Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible low or middle income Commonwealth country; Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country; Be fluent in written and spoken English; Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship within the last five years (at the time of taking up the award). They must also have a startup that meets specific criteria including being registered, innovative, past pilot stage, actively operating for at least twelve months, having a product/service available to customers, demonstrated customer demand, a sustainable business model, positive outcomes, and commercial traction.

The Commonwealth Startup Fellowship is a placement-based fellowship that funds African and other Commonwealth founders and early-stage technology entrepreneurs to spend 3–6 months embedded with a UK startup accelerator, innovation lab or sector-specific host. The fellowship is designed around a defined growth objective for the fellow's own venture. ## Why this scholarship matters for African applicants African tech founders working in fintech, healthtech, agritech, climate tech, edtech and creative industries can use the UK ecosystem (London, Cambridge, Manchester, Edinburgh) to sharpen their product, raise investment, and build distribution partnerships. The Commonwealth alumni network is a long-term asset for follow-on funding. ## What the award covers Return economy airfare to the UK, monthly living stipend, accommodation allowance, host placement fees, and access to the host accelerator's mentor network. Some placements include a budget for prototyping, pilot deployment or investor introductions. ## How the selection process works Applications run through the UK host organisation. Founders typically apply directly to participating UK accelerators or innovation labs, who then nominate selected candidates to the CSC. There is no separate individual application channel — the host is your route in. ## Application tips that move the needle Build a 90-day placement plan with the host before applying: define which product milestones, customer pilots or fundraising goals the placement will unlock. Founders with traction (paying customers, MRR, regulatory pilots) win over founders with only a deck. ## Deadlines and intake windows UK hosts apply to CSC in seasonal rounds — placement timing follows the host's own intake.
