Ongoing academic reporting and programme participation required; Japanese proficiency must support realistic post-graduation employment, even on an English-medium degree.; Residency: Must already live in Japan with relevant status; ordinary citizenship or residence alone is insufficient. ## Who this may suit - **Ethiopia:** No nationality restriction in FY 2027 criteria; target citizens qualify only with the documented refugee background, existing Japan residence and all other conditions. - **Mozambique:** No nationality restriction in FY 2027 criteria; target citizens qualify only with the documented refugee background, existing Japan residence and all other conditions. - **Nigeria:** No nationality restriction in FY 2027 criteria; target citizens qualify only with the documented refugee background, existing Japan residence and all other conditions. - **Kenya:** No nationality restriction in FY 2027 criteria; target citizens qualify only with the documented refugee background, existing Japan residence and all other conditions. ## Funding Need-assessed fee grant and living subsidy; UG years 1–2 up 70 k/month, year 3 up 60 k, year 4 and graduate up 50 k. Other funding reduces unmet need. Not covered: Funding is capped and means-tested; full cost of attendance not guaranteed. Other institutional fees assessed individually. Travel not promised. ## Language Japanese-medium UG: relevant EJU/JLPT. English-medium UG and all graduate: university English requirements plus JLPT N4/equivalent Japanese ability. ## Deadline 14 December 2026 at 23:59 Asia/Tokyo 28 September–14 December 2026,23:59 JST; around 7 recipients.
