Rotary Foundation Global Grants and Scholarships for Africans in Development Studies

The Rotary Foundation Global Grants provides scholarships for Africans and other qualified nationalities who are currently working on graduate-level coursework or research in Development Studies.

Benefits and Value of the Rotary Foundation Global Grant

The Rotary Foundation offers scholarships worth more than 7.5 million USD annually to develop leaders of the next generation and assist their philanthropic objectives. In turn, global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus.

The awards can fund humanitarian projects, scholarships for graduate-level academic studies, and vocational training teams.

On another note, the minimum budget for a global grant scholarship is $30,000. Through this amount, the following needs and expenses can be covered:

  • Passport / VISA
  • Inoculations
  • Travel expenses (as specified in the grant terms and conditions)
  • School supplies
  • Tuition
  • Room and board
  • Household supplies
  • Language training courses (but not if university admission is contingent on improvement of language skills)

Meanwhile, most personal and miscellaneous expenses are not covered by the scholarship funding.

Eligible Fields of Study in Development

Although this grant is targeted at non-Rotarians sponsored by the Rotary District or Clubs, the applicant’s coursework in Development Studies should be anchored on one of the Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus. These are:

  • Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Maternal and child health
  • Basic education and literacy
  • Economic and community development

Furthermore, both the district or club in the country where the activity is carried out, as well as the international partner district or club must first be eligible before the individual applicant can apply for a global grant.

Any approved university located in a country where there is a host Rotary club or district, outside of the applicant’s home country will be welcome to apply.

Scholarship for Africans Application

To apply for the Rotary Foundation Global Grants in Development Studies, interested parties must contact their local Rotary Clubs to learn more about grant management and the application process as a whole.

To be approved, the application must clearly describe how the participant’s project, scholarship, or vocational training team is sustainable. Moreover, it should include plans for long-term success following the global grant provisions. Next, it must responds to real community needs. This can be determined through organizing a community assessment first and then designing the project based on what they learn through that assessment. Lastly, the proposed project should meet the eligibility requirements in the grants terms and conditions

NOTE: Applications are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed as they’re received. However, proposals submitted at least three months before the projected launch date will ensure that the Rotary Foundation has ample time to review the material.
