Canadian flag - Opportunities for Africans and International Graduates

Some 40,000 international graduates of Canadian institutions are viable for permanent residence in Canada. The said opportunity is accessible for Africans and other international students who can “actively contribute” to the country’s economy.

Furthermore, the Canadian government hopes that the pathway residency will encourage more international graduates to “put down roots in Canada.”

Canadian Permanent Residence as an Economic Booster

Currently, there is a large number of temporary residents in Canada and accompanying lower selection criteria. As such, a hefty demand for the graduate stream has surfaced.

The initiative is a portion of a wider announcement allowing permanent residence in Canada for more than 90,000 essential workers and international graduates who “possess the skills and experience [the country] needs to fight the pandemic and accelerate [its] economic recovery.”

Along with the international graduate option, two other streams will grant permanent status to approximately 20,000 temporary workers in health care as well as 30,000 temporary workers in other selected essential occupations.

International Graduate Stream Caps Within 24 Hours

As of May 7, the 40,000 application quota was reached for the international graduate stream for English speakers, only a day after its launch. Additionally, Canada has five other new streams for essential workers and French-speaking international graduates.

There may well be up to 1.5 million work and study permit holders currently in Canada. A large share of them are work permit holders, but there are also about 530,000 study permit holders.

“The pandemic has shone a bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers,” Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRC), Marco Mendicino, stated.

IRC Canada has also extended post-graduate work permit rules to international students forced to study online to ensure they “won’t miss out on opportunities” on work after graduation.

Supposedly, the graduate stream will end on November 5, 2021, or once the applications reach 40,000, whichever comes first.
