How to prepare for local scholarships in Tanzania

  1. 1. Choose the right funding route

Compare the Samia Scholarship with foundation awards such as Karimjee. Samia is a scholarship programme, while the ordinary HESLB student loan scheme requires repayment; do not treat the two as interchangeable.

  2. 2. Check admission and course eligibility

Check that your course and Tanzanian institution are eligible for the particular award. Karimjee asks for admission or enrolment evidence; Samia selection depends on the official science-student guidelines for that year.

  3. 3. Prepare your academic documents

Prepare your NECTA results or relevant transcripts, identity documents and admission evidence. Karimjee's published checklist includes a motivation essay, fee structure and information about existing HESLB loans or other scholarships.

  4. 4. Document financial need honestly

Karimjee assesses financial need alongside academic achievement and asks applicants to disclose other support. For Samia, follow the new merit and course criteria rather than assuming a general means-tested loan application also applies.

  5. 5. Wait for the official 2027 notice

The watchlist's mid-2027 label is an estimate only. Check each official announcement for the opening date, closing date and current application route. Some programmes may announce earlier or later, and a new round is not guaranteed.

  6. 6. Submit and track your own application

Use only the official submission channel specified in the new call. Keep a copy and any receipt, follow shortlisting instructions, and read the award conditions before accepting. Check renewal and reporting duties in the award letter.

Rules change each year — always confirm on HESLB announcements and the Karimjee Foundation's scholarship page.
