How to apply for local scholarships in Rwanda
1. Know the local routes
Local funding comes from Mastercard Foundation partner universities (ALU, UGHE, CMU-Africa), DAAD in-country master's awards at the University of Rwanda, Bridge2Rwanda, and government support coordinated by the Higher Education Council. Each listing below names its funder.
2. Secure admission first
Almost every local award requires an admission letter or current enrolment at a recognised Rwandan institution. Many corporate awards are only open from the second year of university, with a minimum grade.
3. Prepare your documents
Have your national ID, secondary-school or degree results, admission letter if you have one, passport photos and one or two recommendation letters. University programmes usually ask for a personal essay.
4. Expect a test or interview
Corporate and foundation scholarships often shortlist through an aptitude test or interview. Practise numerical and verbal reasoning, and be ready to talk about your community and goals.
5. Watch for fake scholarships
Genuine scholarships never charge an application or 'processing' fee. Apply only through the funder's official website or office, and check the listing below for the official link.
6. Keep your award
Most local awards are renewed each year only if you keep a minimum grade and submit results on time. Note renewal deadlines as soon as you're selected.
Rules change each year — always confirm on hec.gov.rw and on each university's or funder's official website.
