Below are the open scholarships for studying in Ethiopia that accept applicants from Ethiopia, with deadlines taken from official pages, followed by a step-by-step guide. How to apply for local scholarships in Ethiopia
1. Know the local routes
Local funding comes from Mastercard Foundation partner programmes (for example at the University of Gondar and Mekelle University), DAAD in-country/in-region master's and PhD awards at Ethiopian universities, and foundation or university awards. Undergraduate places at public universities follow the Ministry of Education's placement and cost-sharing rules rather than a separate scholarship application. Each listing below names its funder.
2. Secure admission first
Almost every local award requires an admission letter or current enrolment at a recognised Ethiopian institution. Many corporate awards are only open from the second year of university, with a minimum grade.
3. Prepare your documents
Have your national or kebele ID, Ethiopian Secondary School Leaving Certificate (or degree) results, admission letter if you have one, passport photos and one or two recommendation letters. Postgraduate awards usually ask for a research proposal or motivation letter.
4. Expect a test or interview
Corporate and foundation scholarships often shortlist through an aptitude test or interview. Practise numerical and verbal reasoning, and be ready to talk about your community and goals.
5. Watch for fake scholarships
Genuine scholarships never charge an application or 'processing' fee. Apply only through the funder's official website or office, and check the listing below for the official link.
6. Keep your award
Most local awards are renewed each year only if you keep a minimum grade and submit results on time. Note renewal deadlines as soon as you're selected.
Rules change each year — always confirm on moe.gov.et and on each university's or funder's official website.
