How to apply to Chinese scholarships from Ethiopia
1. Know the main routes
Most Ethiopian students reach China through the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC). Type A applications go through the Chinese Embassy in Addis Ababa (often coordinated with Ethiopia's Ministry of Education); Type B goes directly to a participating Chinese university. Some universities and provinces also run their own awards. Check each listing below for which route it uses.
2. Contact a professor early (masters and PhD)
Many Chinese universities give priority to applicants who already hold a pre-acceptance letter from a supervisor. Email two or three professors whose research fits yours, with a short proposal and CV, before the scholarship window opens.
3. Prepare the Foreigner Physical Examination Form
China requires a medical examination form completed and stamped by a recognised hospital, including blood tests. Results are usually valid for six months only, so time it close to your application deadline.
4. Language: English or Chinese-taught?
English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS/TOEFL or a letter confirming English was your medium of instruction. Chinese-taught programmes ask for an HSK certificate; some awards add a preparatory Chinese language year. Confirm the requirement on the official page.
5. Authenticate your documents
Have degree certificates and transcripts authenticated through Ethiopia's Ministry of Education (and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where requested) and notarised copies ready. Allow several weeks.
6. Get the X1 student visa after admission
Once you receive the admission letter and JW201/JW202 form, apply for an X1 visa at the Chinese Embassy in Addis Ababa. Bring your physical examination form and original documents.
Rules change each year — always confirm on the official CSC portal campuschina.org and with the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia.
