## About the HKUST Postgraduate Scholarships The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is committed to attracting top-tier research talent from around the globe. To support this vision, HKUST offers a range of generous scholarships specifically designed for international PhD students. These scholarships aim to alleviate financial burdens, allowing students to focus on their cutting-edge research. ## Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) is an internationally competitive and highly sought-after award established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC). HKUST has consistently recruited the largest number of HKPFS awardees, welcoming students from over 50 countries and regions. This prestigious fellowship offers: * **Stipend:** HK$340,800 (~US$43,730) per year for up to four years. * **Tuition Fee Waiver:** Full waiver of tuition fees for four years. * **HKUST RedBird PhD Award:** A Recruitment Award of HK$40,000 (~US$5,130) in the first year, followed by an Academic Excellence Award of HK$20,000 (~US$2,570) per year in subsequent years, renewable based on satisfactory academic performance. * **Conference Travel Allowance:** HK$14,200 (~US$1,820) per year for four years to support participation in international conferences. *Note: The HKPFS is subject to continual meeting of renewal conditions and compliance with RGC regulations.* ## Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) and RedBird PhD Award Program For eligible candidates who are not selected for the HKPFS, HKUST offers alternative and substantial funding opportunities: ### Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) All full-time PhD students at HKUST are typically considered for the Postgraduate Studentship, which provides: * **Stipend:** HK$229,620 (~US$29,470) per year. * **Duration:** Up to four years for full-time PhD students. ### RedBird PhD Award Program (for International Students) This award recognizes the outstanding academic performance and research potential of international PhD candidates. It includes: * **Recruitment Award:** HK$40,000 (~US$5,130) in the first year. * **Tuition Fee Waiver:** Full tuition fee waiver in the first year. * **Academic Excellence Award:** HK$20,000 (~US$2,570) per year in subsequent years, renewable based on satisfactory academic performance. These combined awards ensure that international PhD students at HKUST receive comprehensive financial support, covering their tuition and living expenses throughout their studies. ## Accommodation and Additional Support HKUST endeavors to support its postgraduate students with guaranteed university accommodation. For full-time MPhil and PhD students admitted in or after 2026/27, guaranteed university accommodation is provided in the first year of research studies. Students admitted before 2026/27 are guaranteed accommodation for the first two years. Furthermore, various other funding and scholarships for current students, such as the Global Research Award, are available to enrich their research experience through international exposure. ## Application Process Applicants typically apply for PhD admission, and their eligibility for these scholarships will be assessed automatically during the application review process.
