Présentation du programme
Commonwealth PhD Scholarships fund full-time doctoral research at UK universities for high-potential African researchers from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries. The award is tied to one of six UK government development themes and is one of very few fully funded PhD-level routes for African applicants without an industry sponsor. ## Why this scholarship matters for African applicants African PhD scholars build research programmes that directly address development challenges in their home country — from climate adaptation in West Africa to maternal health systems in East Africa. The 'return and impact' requirement means most alumni go on to academic, policy and senior public-sector roles back home. ## What the award covers Full UK PhD tuition for up to 3–4 years, return economy airfare, monthly maintenance stipend (~£1,400 London / ~£1,150 elsewhere), thesis grant, fieldwork and research travel grant, and family allowances for spouses and dependent children where rules allow. ## How the selection process works Apply through your country's National Nominating Agency. You also need a UK university supervisor lined up before applying — most successful PhD candidates have a draft research proposal and email contact with a named supervisor at least 4–6 months before the national deadline. ## Application tips that move the needle Sharpen your 8–10 page research proposal: define a specific problem in your home country, the gap in current research, your proposed methodology, and a concrete impact plan. Recruit a UK supervisor whose recent publications overlap with your topic and ask them to confirm willingness to supervise in writing. ## Deadlines and intake windows National nominating deadlines cluster between October and December for the following September intake. Some agencies pre-screen in August — start scoping UK supervisors at least six months before you plan to apply. ## Useful internal reading - Browse open scholarships: https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/scholarships - How to write a winning scholarship essay: https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/blog/how-to-write-winning-scholarship-essay - Scholarship interview questions for African students: https://scholarshipsforafricans.com/blog/scholarship-interview-questions-african-students Always confirm the live intake on the sponsor's official site before you build a timeline around it.
