Commonwealth PhD Scholarships fund full-time doctoral research at UK universities for high-potential African researchers from low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries. The award is tied to one of six UK government development themes and is one of very few fully funded PhD-level routes for African applicants without an industry sponsor. ## Why this scholarship matters for African applicants African PhD scholars build research programmes that directly address development challenges in their home country — from climate adaptation in West Africa to maternal health systems in East Africa. The 'return and impact' requirement means most alumni go on to academic, policy and senior public-sector roles back home. ## What the award covers Full UK PhD tuition for up to 3–4 years, return economy airfare, monthly maintenance stipend (~£1,400 London / ~£1,150 elsewhere), thesis grant, fieldwork and research travel grant, and family allowances for spouses and dependent children where rules allow. ## How the selection process works Apply through your country's National Nominating Agency.
