The University of Essex International Undergraduate Scholarship provides a £5,000 tuition discount for the first year at Essex in 2027–28. It is not a cash payment, does not cover later years or living costs, and cannot pay a required tuition deposit. Who qualifies? Applicants must be entirely self-funded overseas-fee students starting eligible full-time undergraduate study in October 2027. All African Union member states appear in the eligible-country list, but nationality alone is insufficient. Normally, applicants must have been ordinarily resident in an eligible country from 1 September 2024 to 1 September 2027. Overseas-fee nationals of eligible countries ordinarily resident in the UK can also qualify. Temporary absences are assessed by Essex; documentary evidence may be requested. Eligible awards include a Diploma of Higher Education, Foundation Degree, bachelor’s degree or four-year integrated master’s. Direct entry to stage 2 or 3 can qualify if this is the student’s first year at Essex. Wholly Essex-delivered distance courses qualify. A repayable study loan counts as self-funding. Exclusions The award excludes non-repayable government or external sponsorship, Home-fee students, continuing students who started before 2027–28, UEIC pathways, Kaplan-delivered Essex Online, specified Transfer Link or Premium Pathway partners and courses already discounted. It can combine with the Early Bird Discount, but not other Essex scholarships. Deferred entry is reassessed under the new year’s rules. Recipients should be available for promotional activities.
