## Overview The Fulbright Foreign Student Program funds Malawian graduates to pursue Masters degrees — and, in selected fields, doctoral study — at universities in the United States. Nominations for Malawi are handled by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe, with placement by the Institute of International Education. ## Benefits - Tuition and fees at the U.S. host university. - Round-trip international airfare. - Monthly living stipend and settling-in allowance. - Accident and sickness health benefit; J-1 visa support. ## Eligibility - Malawian citizens resident in Malawi at the time of application (U.S. citizens and permanent residents are not eligible). - A completed undergraduate degree with a strong academic record. - Demonstrated leadership and commitment to return to Malawi for at least two years after the grant (J-1 two-year home residency rule). - English proficiency; TOEFL is arranged for shortlisted candidates. ## How to apply The annual competition is announced by the U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe, typically opening early in the year with a deadline in the first half of the year for study starting the following August. Applications are submitted through the Embassy's online Fulbright portal.
