Citizens of South Africa, Lesotho or Malawi, born on or after 1 January 1997, who do not hold dual French citizenship and achieved at least a 60% average in their most recently completed qualification. Master's applicants do not need an offer from a French institution at the time of applying; PhD applicants must already have identified a prospective French supervisor or research laboratory. All fields are eligible, with priority for STEM and related social science and humanities projects.

## Overview The French Embassy in South Africa funds a small, highly selective group of students from Southern Africa to do a master's or PhD in France, starting September 2027. Selection is run by a panel including the Embassy, DHET, the Department of Science and Innovation, the NRF, the French-South African Chamber of Commerce and academics from both countries. ## Level and destination Master's or PhD at a recognised higher education institution in France. Joint or international degrees qualify if at least one partner is in France, but funding covers only the part of your studies carried out in France. ## Eligibility * Citizen of South Africa, Lesotho or Malawi. * Born on or after 1 January 1997. * Not a dual French citizen. * At least a 60% average in your most recently completed qualification. * Master's applicants: no French admission offer needed when you apply. * PhD applicants: you must already have a prospective French supervisor or laboratory. All fields are open; priority goes to digital technologies, AI, quantum, biotechnology, health, environmental sciences, energy, low-carbon mobility, space, food systems and ICT — including humanities and social science projects connected to those areas. ## Funding coverage and exclusions * Monthly living allowance. * One return flight (for the scholar only, not family). * Social protection covering illness, accidents and liability for the scholarship period, excluding conditions contracted before arrival. * Priority — but not a guarantee — of student housing through Campus France. * Online French language courses through the Alliance Française network, February to July 2027. Tuition is **not** generally covered. Fees at French public institutions are low and exemptions may apply, but confirm the position with your chosen institution. If your studies are interrupted, the scholarship is suspended. ## Timeline * Applications opened: 21 July 2026. * Deadline: **8 October 2026, 23:59 South Africa time.** * Interviews: November 2026. * Shortlist announced: early December 2026. * French courses: February–July 2027. * Departure and start of studies: September 2027. ## How to apply 1. Complete the forms and upload every requested document. 4. Make the final submission before 8 October 2026, 23:59 SAST.
